Zephaniah
The Prophet of the Day of the LORDRoyal prophet who warned of the coming Day of the LORD and called Judah to seek the LORD before judgment
Zephaniah was of royal descent - his genealogy traces back to King Hezekiah - giving him unique access to the court of King Josiah. He prophesied during the early years of Josiah's reign, before the great revival. His message centers on the Day of the LORD - coming judgment on Judah, surrounding nations, and ultimately all the earth. Yet he also proclaimed beautiful promises of restoration, including God singing over His people with joy. His warnings may have helped spark Josiah's reforms.
Original Name
צְפַנְיָה (Tsephanyah)
Meaning
Yahweh has hidden/protected, Yahweh treasures
Etymology
Zephaniah combines 'tsaphan' (to hide, treasure, protect) with 'Yah' (YHWH), meaning 'Yahweh has hidden' or 'Yahweh protects.' This connects to his message that the humble may be 'hidden' in the day of God's anger (2:3).
Linguistic Insights
Zephaniah's name ('Yahweh has hidden/protected') connects directly to his message in 2:3 - 'perhaps you will be hidden (tisateru) in the day of the LORD's anger.' The phrase 'Day of the LORD' (Yom YHWH) appears 20+ times, making Zephaniah the prophet of eschatological judgment. The medieval hymn 'Dies Irae' drew heavily from Zephaniah 1:14-18. Perhaps most remarkably, 3:17 portrays God singing: 'He will rejoice over you with singing' (yagil alayik berinah) - the only place in Scripture where God is described as singing over His people.
