Sarah
The Mother of NationsWife of Abraham, originally barren, who miraculously bore Isaac at age 90 and became the ancestral mother of Israel
Sarah was Abraham's wife and half-sister who shared his journey of faith from Ur to Canaan. Despite being barren, God promised she would bear a son and become 'the mother of nations.' When she laughed at this promise at age 89, God named the child 'Isaac' (laughter). Her attempt to fulfill God's promise through her servant Hagar led to Ishmael's birth, creating ongoing conflict. Yet God's covenant passed through Isaac, Sarah's son. She is the only woman whose age at death is recorded in Scripture (127 years) and the only woman whom God personally renamed (from Sarai to Sarah). Peter holds her up as an example of submissive beauty, and Paul uses her to illustrate the free woman versus the slave in his allegory of grace versus law.
Original Name
שָׂרָה (Sarah) / שָׂרַי (Sarai)
Meaning
Princess, Noblewoman
Etymology
Originally named Sarai ('my princess' - possessive, perhaps limited scope), God changed her name to Sarah ('princess' - universal scope) when establishing the covenant. The change removed the limiting suffix, making her princess of all nations, not just one family.
Linguistic Insights
The name change from Sarai to Sarah parallels Abram to Abraham - both removing limitation and adding universality. 'Sarah' means princess in the fullest sense - she would be mother of kings and nations. Her laugh (tsachaq) gave Isaac his name (Yitschaq - 'he laughs'). When she said 'God has made laughter (tsechoq) for me,' the Hebrew allows both 'laughter with me' and 'laughter at me' - transforming her doubt into joy. The only matriarch whose age at death is recorded (127 years), Jewish tradition sees significance in each digit. Peter's reference to her calling Abraham 'lord' (kyrios/adon) points to her as a model of faith, not subservience. Paul's allegory identifies her with 'the Jerusalem above' - the mother of all who live by faith.
Translation Notes
- •Sarai = 'my princess' (limited); Sarah = 'princess' (universal)
- •Only woman's death age recorded in Scripture
- •Her laugh became Isaac's name
- •Paul allegorizes her as the 'free woman' (Galatians 4)
